Cleaning
Maintain your floors by keeping them clear of dirt, sand, and grit. Regular sweeping or vacuuming is crucial to stop grit from accumulating and damaging the surface finishes. For cleaning, a damp mop, soft broom, or a vacuum with its brushes engaged is recommended. Opt for a low PH cleaner, like the Bona Professional Series for Stone, Tile, & Laminate, and always adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines. Promptly clean and dry any liquids or spills to prevent damage. Remove and clean any animal waste immediately to avoid stains. To further protect your floors, place entry mats at all exterior doors.
Care
To prevent scratching, always place felt pads beneath furniture legs. Use non-staining protective mats under heavy furniture that is frequently moved or might indent or scratch the floor. Furniture on wheels should be fitted with rubber casters and/or placed on non-staining protective mats. Exercise caution when shifting heavy furniture or appliances; employ protective sheets to safeguard the flooring when positioning heavy items. Avoid dragging weighty objects across the floor.
It's advisable to take off spiked or hard-soled shoes to avoid damaging the floor. Refrain from applying adhesives directly to the flooring, as removing them could lead to damage or discoloration. Protect your floors from excessive direct sunlight; windows should be covered with suitable treatments to mitigate exposure.
Ensure the floor does not become waterlogged. Water seeping into the subfloor may cause mildew growth or structural damage to the subfloor.
Installation should be completed by suitably qualified trades and must adhere to any relevant NCC & building requirements.
Expansion and building movement consideration
Ensure a minimum gap of 8mm between the flooring and exterior room walls, as well as any vertical obstructions like fixed furnishings, cabinets, and oven legs. Skirting boards and scotia must be attached to the walls in a way that allows the floor to move naturally. This includes avoiding the attachment of nails and adhesives directly to the flooring boards, for example, when sealing gaps between the flooring and skirting boards or kitchen units.
Flooring Preparation
Before installation, the area must be cleared of all debris. The surface must be solid and structurally sound, with leveling done to minimise variations — no more than a 2mm difference across a 1000mm radius to guarantee complete contact between the plank and the subfloor. Any imperfections must be smoothed out to ensure there's no more than a 1mm deviation over a 250mm area. Gaps, such as those found in tile grout lines and joins in sheet subflooring, should not be wider than 3mm.
For timber subfloors, adequate ventilation is required, and humidity levels must meet the standards set by relevant building codes. Concrete subfloors, on the other hand, should maintain a relative humidity level no higher than 75%.
In Slab Heating
For in-slab heating systems, the flooring's temperature must not surpass 28°C. The heating system should be switched off before beginning the installation process. Once installed, the temperature of the heating system should be gradually increased, at a rate no faster than 5°C per day. It is essential to consult with the supplier of your heating system to verify that your chosen floor coverings are suitable for use with in-slab heating. Please note, Sunstar Timber Flooring cannot guarantee products installed in a manner that contradicts the recommendations of the heating system supplier.
